Appendix E: Mapping Recommendations
The recommended mapping setup is described below, which is required to migrate the default CADSTAR Self Teach library and data to eCADSTAR.
Attributes: Mapping Recommendations
All library-based attributes are migrated as defined in CADSTAR. Any invalid characters are mapped to a valid character by the migration process. There is therefore no requirement to directly map any CADSTAR attribute names to eCADSTAR attribute names.
Global Signals: Mapping Recommendations
The CADSTAR Migration Mapping dialog does not necessarily need to include all global signals. This is because there are wildcard names which are considered automatically as power and ground items. See Appendix D: Global Signals. The Global signals that are included in the CADSTAR library are listed below. These are all covered by the default wildcard names, so do not need to be added into the CADSTAR Migration Mapping dialog.

CADSTAR Global signals do not specifically need to be populated into the mapping information. Any global signals that are not covered by the default wildcard naming should be added to this section if they need to be set as power or ground symbols.
Sheet Frames - Mapping Recommendations
Any CADSTAR symbols that need to be migrated to eCADSTAR for use as Sheet Frames (Drawing Frames) must be added to this section. If not detailed here, then they are considered to be symbols to be used by parts during the migration. In CADSTAR, the sheet frames are all defined as Documentation Symbols. These are not directly migrated as part of the library migration, but are addressed in the main detail of the migration process. The following image shows the content related to the CADSTAR documentation symbols representing sheet frames.
Areas (Keepout): Mapping Recommendations
By default, the CADSTAR Self teach PCB designs contain no keepout areas. There is therefore no need to include any mapping details in this section of the dialog. The CADSTAR Self teach PCB designs include placement area. These are always mapped automatically to the HeightLimit-A (Top Layer) and HeightLimit-B (Bottom Layer) layers in eCADSTAR.
Board Outline: Mapping Recommendations
This is an optional setting for the migration process. If the board outline shape must be included in any manufacturing documentation, then this should be defined. The layer name set will always be generated as a user defined layer.
Layer Deletion: Mapping Recommendations
This mapping section is used to remove unwanted layers from the eCADSTAR design. If the final eCADSTAR migration result must not include specific layers, then this section can optionally be used.
Layer Mapping: Mapping Recommendations
When mapping to the master eCADSTAR Library that is generated from the CADSTAR Libraries, this section requires the most input to ensure the best results. The CADSTAR Self teach design Chapter 11.pcb has the following layer settings.
- The design is using the layer Sub-Type options
for layers on both top and bottom sides of the design. Therefore,
the mapping by sub type option should be enabled. The remaining high-level
layers should be mapped in the layer mapping grid.
- Mapping the Electrical, Powerplane layers will enable a consistent naming approach in both library and design migration. Both library and design data will contain layer names of the Conductor-N format.
- If mapping is not included, then the library migration will contain the layers as defined in CADSTAR, with invalid characters replaced with valid characters. For example, Top Elec becomes Top_Elec, but the design will still contain layers in the Conductor-1 format. All other layers in the CADSTAR Self teach design will be migrated as user defined layers of a similar name but with invalid characters replaced with valid characters.
Templates: Mapping Recommendations
This section allows you to define a specific user defined layer name for migrating template shapes too. The CADSTAR Self teach design only contains template data on the Bottom Elec layer, and only requires the single item to be included. However, all layers could be defined as the resulting eCADSTAR design will only contain the layers where template shapes exist.
Defaults: Mapping Recommendations
This section sets the values for the default sizes of thermal relief shapes, and the requirement to migrate inner layers as either suppressed or unsuppressed.
