Placement Tools

Placement Tools: Move Component

You can move components in two ways:

  • Dragging : drag components by selecting the component using the Shift key. Click and hold while dragging, and then release to position the component.
  • Using the Move command: clicking the Move command located on the Home tab, or pressing M on the keyboard opens a command dialog. When in this mode, select a component with a single click and release of the left mouse key. The origin of the component remains with the cursor. While in this mode, right-click to display the assist menu. This allows you to do the following.
  • Use the Input Coordinates dialog.
  • Rotate the component (The E key provides a shortcut).
  • Swap the component from one side of the PCB to the other.

This can be performed while checking DRC rules in real time.

Overview

While a component is being moved the application switches to the placement grid. Once the component is released the application switches back to the track grid.

By enabling the Snap function you can slowly pass the cursor over the pins of the component. Once the origin is found a snap marker symbol appears. You can then click the snap marker while holding down the Shift key, and place the component by this point. Clicking anywhere else allows you to move the component by a temporary origin.

  • You can move several components at the same time by frame-selecting them. If any part of a component is included within the area, it is selected. Components can be added to, or removed from the selection by pressing the Ctrl key while clicking the mouse. Ctrl clicking causes the component to be toggled between the selected and non-selected states.
  • Drag the components to start the moving operation and place them in the required position.
  • Components can be placed at a specific location by right-clicking during the move to access the assist menu.
