Understanding Padstacks

All padstacks and footprints within a library reference the same set of footprint Layers. That layer set should be fully defined before you start entering footprints or padstacks. Pads exist on the conductor and solder resist layers. This is illustrated in the following image that shows connected, unconnected, thermal and clearance pad shapes which have all been placed on a single inner conductor layer. The horizontal positions shown do not represent any horizontal pad positions on an actual PCB. Each pad within a padstack is chosen from the available pad definitions in the library.

Note
Thermal pads and clearance pads are used with a power plane when post processing as a negative artwork. They are also used with positive/negative layer types.
