Calculate Characteristic Impedance - > Track Width

The Calculate characteristic impedance - > Track Width dialog allows you to select a track width stack that has been specified in the Rule Editor Dialog: Tracks tab, and then calculate the track width, characteristic impedance, and delay per unit length for each conductor layer. These values are calculated, based on the target characteristic impedance that you specify. Click the Apply calculated results to track width stack button to add the calculated values to the Rule Editor Dialog: Tracks Tab.

Item Description
Track width stack Displays the track width stack names that you entered using the Track width stack button in the Tracks tab.
Rounding precision for track width For a Track width value, this field allows you to set the value by which the track width is incremented in order to reach the Target characteristic impedance value that you specify. When you click Calculate Track Width, the Track width value is automatically incremented by this value until the characteristic impedance is as close as possible to the Target characteristic impedance value. The most accurate results are produced by specifying smaller values.
Note
  • If you change the units in the design, then the precision of the calculated track width value may appear to be different as the value is displayed using the new units. However, the specified precision is maintained. For example, in units of mm, specifying a rounding precision of 0.01, might produce a track width of 0.43000. If this value is saved and the units are changed to inch, then this saved value is changed to 0.01693 in the Tracks Tab.
  • If the units are set to mil in eCADSTAR, and a value of 0.04 or less is entered in the Rounding Precision for Track Width box, then the calculated track width is displayed with higher precision than specified.
Calculate Track Width Calculates values for Track width, Characteristic impedance calculated value [Ω], and either Delay or using the target characteristic impedance value that you enter in the Target characteristic impedance [Ω] column.
Apply calculated results to track width stack The values for Track width, Characteristic impedance calculated value [Ω], and either Delay or that were calculated using the Calculate Track Width button, are added to the Characteristic impedance [Ω], and either the Delay or columns, respectively, in the Tracks tab.

Track width table

Allows you to enter a target characteristic impedance for each conductor layer. The calculated track width, characteristic impedance and delay are displayed for each relevant layer in the table.

Item Description
Conductor layer Lists the conductor layers that are added in the Board tab.
Layer attribute Displays the attribute value for each Layer.
Target characteristic impedance [Ω] Allows you to specify a target value for characteristic impedance. When you click Calculate Track Width, this value is used as a target when calculating the characteristic impedance for the layer. The calculated value will be as close as possible to this value.
Track width The track width that is calculated for the relevant layer, using the value specified in the Target characteristic impedance [Ω] box. This value is displayed when you click Calculate Track Width.
Characteristic impedance calculated value [Ω] The value for characteristic impedance that is calculated for the relevant layer, using the value specified in the Target characteristic impedance [Ω] box. This value is displayed when you click Calculate Track Width.
Delay The delay per unit length that is calculated for the relevant layer using the value specified in the Target characteristic impedance [Ω] box. This is displayed when you click Calculate Track Width. This column is displayed only if delay is set to nanoseconds in the in .

Note
You must restart Rule Editor to apply changes to the units for delay that you specify in the Application Settings dialog, Interaction tab.
